African Champions League: Morocco’s RS Berkane Bests Sudan’s Al Hilal, Advances to Semifinals

 Morocco’s Renaissance Berkane (RSB) qualified for the semifinals of the African Champions League after defeating Al Hilal Omdurman (Sudan) 1-0 in an away match on Sunday at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, as part of the quarterfinals’ second leg.

The only goal of the match was scored in the 93rd minute by Mounir Chouiar, allowing his team to advance to the semifinals after a tight contest that went down to the wire.

The first leg, played in Berkane, had ended in a 1-1 draw. With this victory, RS Berkane secured its spot in the competition’s semifinals.

In the semifinals, RS Berkane will face AS FAR, which qualified for the semifinals of the African Champions League after a 2-1 away victory over Pyramids FC, thanks to goals by Reda Slim and Rabii Hrimat. The Egyptians’ only goal was scored in the 62nd minute by Fiston Mayele

As the only Arab and African representative, WAC competed in Group C alongside Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid, Real Betis, and Sevilla FC.

In a statement to MAP, the tournament’s founder, José Ramón de la Morena, had previously recalled that the tournament, launched 30 years ago, aims to create opportunities for young footballers and promote the values of effort, respect, and solidarity, welcoming its evolution into a global competition.

He also expressed his enthusiasm about discovering WAC’s young players, praising the quality of the club’s academy, the rise of Moroccan football, and the remarkable performance of the Morocco national football team at the last World Cup.

The competition concluded on Sunday with Real Betis Balompié being crowned champions after a hard-fought and spectacular 3–1 victory over Flamengo in the final.

Morocco’s AS FAR qualified for the semifinals of the African Champions League after defeating Egypt’s Pyramids FC 2-1 in an away match on Saturday at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo, in the quarterfinals’ second leg.

AS FAR opened the scoring in the 9th minute through Reda Slim, before doubling their lead in the 54th minute thanks to Rabii Hrimat.

The Egyptians narrowed the gap in the 62nd minute through Fiston Mayele, but were unable to equalize.

The first leg, played in Rabat, had ended in a 1-1 draw.

With this victory (3-2 on aggregate), AS FAR secured its spot in the competition’s semifinals.

In the semifinals, AS FAR will face the winner of the two-leg series between RS Berkane and Al Hilal Omdurman, the outcome of which will be determined following Sunday’s match.

Renaissance Sportive de Berkane (RSB) beat Tanzanian side Simba SC 2–0 (halftime 2–0) on Saturday at Berkane Municipal Stadium in the first leg of the  CAF Confederation Cup final.

RS Berkane, crowned Moroccan champions this year for the first time in their history, are aiming for a third title in the competition, following their victories in 2020 and 2022.

Tunisian coach Mouaine Chaabani’s men eliminated Algerian club CS Constantine in the semi-finals (first leg 4-0, return leg 0-1).

The return leg is scheduled for next Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in Tanzania.

RS Berkane advanced to the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup after a 1-0 home victory over Côte d’Ivoire’s ASEC Mimosas on Wednesday, sealing a 2-0 aggregate win in the quarter-final tie.

Oussama Lamlioui netted the decisive goal in the 76th minute at the Municipal Stadium in Berkane, firing a low shot from the edge of the box to beat the Ivorian goalkeeper and secure progression for the Moroccan side.

Berkane, who also won the first leg 1-0 in Abidjan last week, weathered early pressure from the visitors before gradually imposing their rhythm in the second half.

Twice champions of the competition (2020, 2022) and runners-up in 2019 and 2024, the Moroccan club now await the winner of the all-Algerian quarter-final between CS Constantine and USM Alger.

The other semi-final will see Tanzania’s Simba SC face South Africa’s Stellenbosch FC.

Moroccan club RS Berkane has welcomed a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirming its victory over Algeria’s USM Algiers in the semi-finals of the 2023-24 CAF Confederation Cup.

In a statement on Wednesday, the club said it had received the CAS decision, which rejected USM Algiers’ appeal to annul the results of both legs and impose sanctions on Berkane.

“The ruling upholds RS Berkane’s victory without any penalties, a decision that has been met with great satisfaction by our supporters,” the club said.

The CAS decision effectively ends the dispute, cementing Berkane’s place in the tournament’s final standings.
