National team coach Walid Regragui said he was delighted for the players and the fans after the Atlas Lions qualified for the final of the AFCON Morocco 2025 by defeating Nigeria on Wednesday.

“These are matches decided by mental strength and fine margins. It’s a wonderful gift for the Moroccan public,” Regragui said at the post-match press conference following the semi-final, which Morocco won on penalties (4-2) after a goalless draw at the end of extra time.

“We faced a solid, well-organized team. We needed a lot of energy and must recover as quickly as possible,” he added, noting that the most important thing is that Morocco have reached the AFCON final, 22 years after their last appearance in 2004 against Tunisia.

“We went through difficult moments. We must stay positive and focused in order to win this title together,” Regragui continued, adding that preparations will begin on Thursday ahead of the final against Senegal, scheduled for the 18th of this month in Rabat.

In this context, the national coach praised the work of the Atlas Lions’ medical staff, describing it as “one of the best in the world.” “Today’s victory also belongs to the entire staff. It is Morocco’s victory,” he underlined.

Morocco climbed to a record sixth place in the latest FIFA Men’s World Ranking released on Monday, following the Atlas Lions’ run to the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The North African side gained one position from the June rankings, reaching its highest-ever ranking since the FIFA Men’s World Ranking was introduced in 1993.

Morocco now has 1,803.99 points, an increase of 48.89 points from the previous edition, and trails fifth-ranked Brazil by less than one point.

The Atlas Lions are ranked ahead of Portugal, which dropped two places to seventh, as well as Belgium (8th), the Netherlands (9th), and Mexico (10th).

World Cup champion Spain moved to the top of the rankings with 1,995.88 points, overtaking Argentina, which slipped to second after losing the final. France and England retained third and fourth places, respectively.

Morocco remains Africa’s highest-ranked team, ahead of Senegal (18th), Egypt (24th), Nigeria (26th), and Algeria (29th). Norway recorded the biggest rise in the July rankings, climbing 12 places to 19th, while Tunisia registered the largest drop, falling 12 places to 57th.

Spain also posted the largest points gain (+121.17), while Panama recorded the biggest points loss (-60.74).
